How To Read A Measuring Tape

Sunday, March 23rd, 2008

How to Read a Measuring Tape, How to Read Tape Measure, Procedure of Reading Measuring TapeKnowing how to read a measuring tape is quite simple! But it has so many applications in our daily lives like for measuring fabrics, area, etc. that it is important that one knows how to read a measuring tape. Moreover, you may need to use a measuring tape at one point of time or another if not on a daily basis. So read this article that teaches you how to read a tape measure.

How to Read Tape Measure - The Basics
The measuring tape has got a number of lines indicating specific measurements.
The top portion of a standard tape measure is feet, inches and fractions of inches.
The bottom portion of the measuring tape device stands for centimeters and millimeters.
Remember - 12 inches is equivalent to one (1) foot.
10 millimeters is equal to one (1) centimeter.
On the foot measurement part of the tape, the red numbers or ft numbers are the feet measurements. This will actually depend on the kind of tape measure you are using.
The inches will be marked on the measuring tape in large numbers.
The middle line between inches symbolizes half (1/2). The second largest lines on the measuring tape will be the one-fourth (1/4th), whereas the third largest lines will be the one-eighth (1/8th). The smallest lines on the tape measure are one-sixth (1/16th).
Now Learn How to Read Tape Measure
Keep the object you want to take measurement of on a flat surface. It is pertinent that the object to be measured is kept flat otherwise the measurements will be come faulty.
Bigger objects (to be measured) need be read in inches and feet. There will be times when you will have to use centimeters or millimeters also for accurately measuring the object. English instructions get completed in inches and feet measurements.
When taking measurements, you need to line up the tape measure completely from the start of the item.
Example - Measuring the Remote Control
First of all, the tape measure needs to be placed length wise along with the remote control to register its length.
The end of this object you are measuring may fall inside the fraction portion of the inches. There will be 16 lines between the first inch and the second inch.
Incase the measurement of the object falls in the center of an inch, then the measurement should be read as the inch number and / plus half (1/2). Example - Seven and a half inches.
On the other hand if the measurement of this object falls on one of the smaller lines, this could be read as one-fourth (1/4) or three-fourth (3/4). This is because 2/4th is 1/2 and 4/4th is the next inch. The same rule will work with 1/8th as well as with 1/16th. Try recording the smallest number possible while taking down the measurements.
So if the remote was 8 inches and 10/16th, the accurate measurement would be 8 5/8 inches. This same idea will work with centimeters and millimeters as well.
The remote control that is 8 5/8 inches would translate to 21.7 centimeters or 217 millimeters.
When measuring in centimeters and millimeters with a measuring tape, just keep in mind that you cannot combine the two. In this particular case, the measurement will be either in centimeters or millimeters. It cannot be both together at the same time.

How to Get Rid Of Cockroaches - Getting Rid Of Roaches- Cockroach Control TipsThe sight of an ugly cockroach raising its head from among a clusters of utensils stored in the cupboard at home is not an uncommon one. Nevertheless, each time it unfailingly sends a shiver down the spine. Most of the time cockroaches not only feast upon the food items you may have stored at home, but also damage books, wall papers, etc. As such, it is important that you get rid of these cockroaches as soon as possible. Read this article that provides you some effective tips for cockroach control.

Cockroach Control Tips

When you spot cockroaches at home, try figuring out where they are coming from. But when you actually get down to doing it, you will discover that this is not all that easy. Roaches normally live in groups. So check for possible cracks and holes in your home, which they might have converted into a living zone. Once you have spotted it, you can clean up the place.

You can also kill the cockroaches if you want. There are many ways to do this. For example, you can use an insecticide spray, cockroach bait or a roach trap, etc.

You can use a liquid concentrate for getting rid of cockroaches. Such concentrates are basically poison or deterrent chemical that is thinned with water. It can be sprayed, wiped or mopped onto just about any type of surface. It will remain effective for a week or so preventing the re-infestation of the roaches.
A very simple way to kill cockroaches is by using a solution of soap and water. Make a light concentrate and spray this on the body of the roach. Since roaches breathe through their skin, the forming of a thin soap film will block their breathing pores on the skin. This way, the roach will suffocate to death or near death.

The best way to prevent re-infestation of cockroaches in the house is by keeping it clean. Take care to regularly clean your house, especially all nooks and corners if you do not want the roaches to resurface.

Get help from a professional. Incase all the above mentioned roach control tips do not work, then call a pest-control expert. These people are licensed to use stronger chemicals and they can do so while keeping your family safe

Let go all your worries because removing oil based stains from fabric was never easy before this. Whether it’s a stain of cooking, automotive or lubricating oil, you can use this easy tip to get grease off your clothes.Things Required

  • Talcum Powder (or Cornstarch)
  • Liquid Detergent (or Dish Detergent)

Directions

  • To begin with, take the affected garment/ fabric and spread it on a flat surface with the oil based stain facing upside.
  • Now, sprinkle good amount of talcum powder or cornstarch over the stain.
  • Allow the powder to rest there for some hours or even overnight.
  • After the due time, brush off the excess powder.
  • In case you find oily powder residue on the fabric, rub it off and pour the powder once again and let the fabric to rest.
  • Once you’ve finished this, wash or dry clean your fabric as you always do.
  • After washing, examine the spot sooner than placing the garment in the dryer.
  • In case the oil spot is still present, you can rub alcohol over it to get your clothes all new again. Remember that alcohol can also lift the color, so it’s better to test it in an inconspicuous spot before using.

Tips

  • This method can be used on any and every type of fabric.
  • Warm or hot water is always preferable for washing such fabric.
  • Ensure you scrape off all powder from the fabric before dry cleaning.
  • Dish detergent can be utilized for washing since molecules in such liquids are prepared to trap oil.

Blinds & Shades

Friday, November 2nd, 2007

Blinds and shades are used to block light from the sun that may cause furniture or flooring to fade. Guidelines are provided for choosing the right blinds or shades for your home.

Choosing Between Blinds or Shades
Windows of every conceivable size and type have opened up a wide array of decorating possibilities and elevated them to an important status in every room. Window treatments have followed suit, and today there are many options for designer looks. Shades and blinds, once rather unglamorous, functional necessities for providing window coverage have come a long way. Vertical, fabric blinds adorn large windows for a light and airy look and can be rotated for privacy when desired. The latest styles in Venetian blinds afford privacy and can be opened at various angles to allow light in. Many of the more inexpensive mini-blinds are available in a variety of pastels and bright colors, especially appealing for children’s rooms and other casual areas.

Others, such as wooden blinds with wider slats lend a sophisticated air. When combined with other window treatments, such as a valance, the top of the blind and its hardware are hidden, giving a clean natural look.

Shades have come a long way from the standard white pull-down variety. Designed in billows and folds, such as the popular balloon shade, these window coverings can be made in any fabric to complement decor.

The most important basic consideration for shades and blinds is proper measuring of the window. Shades may be installed with an inside or outside mounts. Inside mounts are inside the window frame while outside mounts cover the window and more if necessary, giving the window a larger appearance than it is. Be sure to use a steel, not a cloth, tape measure. Once the window is completed, it will become as enjoyable as your favorite furnishings

Fashionable Horizontal Blinds
Think horizontal blinds are tired and boring? Not so! Today’s horizontal blinds are more fashionable than ever, thanks to a wide assortment of colors that allow them to fit virtually any decor.

In addition, many of the products available on the market today come with sleek-looking headrails and other attractive features that make them a perfect product for a homeowner looking to block out light and gain privacy.

Hunter Douglas Window Fashions, for instance, has introduced a Lightlines horizontal blind. It has an exclusive deLight feature that blocks out the light that ordinary horizontal blinds do not. The new Lightlines product hides the rout holes typically associated with horizontal blinds. The absence of the rout holes not only keeps out the light, but also makes for a more aesthetically pleasing product.

Love the thought of horizontal blinds but hate the thought of dust? There are now products on the market that address that problem. Levolor Home Fashions, for instance, features DustGuard as an option on its horizontal blinds. DustGuard is a special patented process that neutralizes the forces of static electricity to resist dust and other airborne particles.

Springs Window Fashions Division Inc., meanwhile, has introduced an aluminum blind system that features improvements in operation and appearance. The new blind, known as the Graber Ultimate Supreme, includes an All-In-One cord that allows the user to raise, lower and tilt blinds evenly, a lift tape that is much thinner than traditional cords for improved slat closure, and a new light-blocking headrail.

Our walls section explores the varied forms and designs that can create an individual look and feel for a home and provides easy pratical ways to install in insulation. Also included in this section is a complete walkthrough on how to install a wall and information on different kinds of insulation.

How to Repair Damaged Plaster Walls
If you have all the necessary tools, your only expense is the cost of perlited plaster and ready-mix joint compound, both of which are affordable and in most hardware stores. Consisting of finely crushed gypsum rock and volcanic glass, perlited plaster is both lightweight and durable

Before Plastering: Excess moisture in the wall or room can affect the plastering, so make sure to fix any leaks or causes of moisture several weeks before plastering. The best temperature for plastering is between 55 degrees and 70 degrees. Keep the room at this temperature a least 24 hours before plastering to ensure that the walls are completely dry. The room must stay at this temperature during plastering and until the plaster has completely set. These repair tips apply only for plaster walls with lath backing and will not work for plaster board walls.

Similar steps are taken in repairing holes and cracks. Even the supporting wood frame area behind the plastered area, called the lath, can be easily repaired. Fixing holes without a lath is another easy job that just takes the right tools and a little skill.

Mixing: Follow manufacturer’s instructions when mixing the plaster with water. Larger holes will need a thicker plaster mixture than smaller holes.

Safety First: When plastering, wear safety goggles, a long sleeve shirt and cotton work gloves for eye and skin protection. Wear a sanding respirator to prevent inhalation while breaking dried plaster or when mixing.

Repairing Holes

Tools and Materials You Need:

  • Cold chisel
  • Ball peen hammer
  • Utility knife
  • Paintbrush
  • Latex bonding agent (or spray bottle and water)
  • Regular formulation perlited plaster (sized for your repair job)
  • 10-inch wallboard knife
  • Spray bottle and water
  • Ready-mix joint compound
  • Sponge
  • Sandpaper
  • Interior primer

Chip Away Damaged Plaster: Remove the damaged plaster by using a cold chisel and a ball peen hammer to chip the damaged plaster off the wall. Be sure not to chip too hard or you will damage the lath, which is the wood structure that supports the plaster. Using a utility knife, smooth the inside edges of the hole.

Apply Latex Bonding Agent: To make sure the dry plaster and lath do not absorb too much moisture, use a brush to apply a latex bonding agent to the lath and exposed plaster. Ask your hardware store for the right bonding agent for plaster. If you do not have latex bonding agent, simply dampen the area well by spraying water with a spray bottle.

Apply and Scratch Plaster: Apply a layer of 3/8-inch thick plaster using a 10-inch wallboard knife. To help the second coat stick well, cross scratch the first coat of plaster as it begins to set.

Apply Second Layer: After letting the first coat dry for 24 hours, use a spray bottle to dampen the area with water. Distribute a second 3/8-inch thick layer of plaster over the hole and cross scratch as before. This layer must also dry for 24 hours.

Distribute Joint Compound: Apply the joint compound with a 10-inch wallboard knife after the second layer is dry. This final layer must be applied very thin to blend with the wall and must dry for 24 hours. Once completely dry, wipe the area with a damp sponge and sand until it is smooth.

Prime the Area: Paint the area with interior primer. After completely dry, the area can be finished with paint or wall covering.

Repairing Cracks

Tools and Materials You Need:

  • Utility knife
  • Spray bottle and water
  • -Bag of regular formulation perlited plaster (sized for your repair job)
  • 4-inch wallboard knife
  • Fine closed-coat sandpaper (150 grit)
  • Sponge
  • Interior primer

Smooth and Apply Plaster: Smooth cracked area with a utility knife, cutting away any jagged edges and dampen the area with a spray bottle and water. Apply a layer of plaster to the crack with a 4-inch wallboard knife, making sure it is even with the wall. Crack repairs usually need only 1 layer of plaster. Allow the area to dry for 24 hours.

Sand and Prime: Using a piece of fine closed-coat sandpaper (150 grit), sand the plastered area until it is smooth. Wipe the patch with a damp sponge and paint the area with interior primer, letting it dry completely. Finish the area by painting or covering with wallpaper.

Repairing Damaged Lath

Tools and Materials You Need:

  • Wood chisel (or mallet)
  • Metal lath (similar to heavy screen)
  • 6-inch piece of wire
  • Wooden dowel
  • Bag of regular formulation perlited plaster (sized for your repair job)
  • Wire cutters
  • Ready-mix joint compound
  • Closed-coat sandpaper (150 fine grit)

Insert Metal Lath in the Hole: If the lath behind the hole is damaged, cut the damaged wood out with a wood chisel or a mallet. Take a piece of metal lath, which is similar to heavy screen, and insert a wire loop at the center of the lath. Holding the wire tightly, push the metal lath into the hole and pull the wire so that the metal lath is pressed firmly against the inside of the hole.

Apply Plaster Over Lath: Twist the metal wire tightly around a wooden dowel making sure the dowel is pressed firmly against the wall. Apply a coat of plaster and cross scratch it as it begins to set.

Distribute Joint Compound: Once the area is dry, remove the wooden dowel and cut the wire with wire cutters. Apply your thin layer of joint compound and let it dry for 24 hours. The area can be painted or wallpapered after sanding and wiping down with a damp sponge.

Repairing a Hole without Lath

Tools and Materials You Need:

  • Wallboard saw
  • Gypsum lath (or 3/8-inch thick wallboard)
  • Power screw driver
  • Wallboard screws
  • Regular formulation perlited plaster
  • Trowel
  • Ready-mix joint compound
  • Spray bottle and water
  • 10-inch wallboard knife
  • Small-cell polyurethane sponge
  • Fine-closed sandpaper
  • Paintbrush
  • Interior primer

Install Wallboard Over the Hole: If there is a hole in your plaster without any lath behind the hole, you need to install a piece of wallboard or gypsum lath over the area without lath before plastering. Cut the wallboard or gypsum lath to fit the area without the lath. Fasten the corners of the gypsum lath or wallboard to the existing lath behind the plaster. Use a power screw driver and wallboard screws.

Apply Plaster: Using a trowel, apply plaster over the hole covering the patch and filling the entire hole. Let the area dry for 24 hours.

Apply Joint Compound: Use a 10-inch wallboard knife to apply a thin layer of joint compound about 5 inches beyond the edge of the hole and let it dry for 24 hours. Wipe the area with a damp sponge and sand. Using a paintbrush, coat the area with a layer of interior primer and let it dry completely before painting or wallpapering.

Aromatherapy Home Solutions

Saturday, October 20th, 2007

Aromatherapy refers to the use of selected fragrant substances as oils, lotions, inhalants and other forms to affect the mood of an individual and promote his or her health. In home, we can make use of these tips while bathing in bathrooms and feel fresh for the whole day and even get rid of all those bugs, insects and cockroaches in hidden corners of our homes. Today, fragrant aromatherapy candles or a bag of aromatherapic potpourri is quite in vogue and are known for their calming and stimulating effects and are quite effective as energizers too. Make sure that you are not allergic to any of the substances used here before you make use of them. Here are some aromatic therapeutic solutions you can use for your home:

  • Aromatherapy uses essential oils extracted out of fragrant plants by compressing them. They are either inhaled or mixed with bath water to affect the mood as desired. They are also used to keep away insects, freshen up clothes and polish furniture.
  • Essential oils get absorbed through our skin in our body and can heal us by stimulating specific areas of our brain, whether they are mixed with bath water or used for massaging our body.
  • A healthy spray that protects your houseplants and garden can be prepared by adding 6 to 8 drops of the mixture in a gallon of water prepared by mixing together lavender and thyme oils. Thyme oil in water helps to grow healthier cabbage and cauliflower while basil oil favor growth of broccoli, potatoes and tomatoes. Yarrow oil for cucumbers, chamomile for onions and carrot extract for lettuce are a blessing for your kitchen garden.
  • Add 2 tablespoons of soap dissolved in 2 cups of boiling water to two cups of turpentine and one cup of melted natural beeswax and then add 10 drops of cedar wood, cypress or sandalwood oil to make a great-looking furniture polish that can be used for all wood finishes.
  • For the fresh smelling clothes, throw a cloth with two drops of bergamot, lavender, neroli, cedar wood, petit grain and sweet orange oils in the dryer with them.
  • Mix about 6 drops of lavender, lemongrass, citronella and peppermint oils in one cup of water to prepare a room spray that can rid us of mosquitoes, ants and cockroaches.
  • Mix together citronella oil, cedar wood oil, garlic and clothes freshener and put a couple of its drops in the collar of your pet without diluting it. It gets rid of the fleas in the fur of your pets and do not harm them a bit.
  • Mix together eucalyptus, thyme, rosemary, tea tree, lemon and marjoram oils. To immune yourself and your family against colds, make a room spray by adding six drops of the preparation per cup of water or adding 4 to 9 drops of it in the water of a humidifier.
  • Mix together lemon, bergamot, lavender, sweet orange, oregano and thyme oils and mix 8 drops of it in a liter of warm water to use a bathroom freshener. You can also use it as a cleaner by pouring 2 to 3 drops of undiluted mixture on a wet sponge and wipe down all surfaces using wash water. Add more oil to the sponge when necessary.
  • Pour a few drops of undiluted peppermint and spearmint oils near the living areas, edges of the ceiling and other holes to drive off mice and other bugs from the home
